Meetings with Prisoners
Meetings with prisoners
The volunteers of Mid-Dlam ghad-Dawl meet the prisoners every week. Infallibly, constantly and regularly, we have been doing this since December 1995. In fact, we consider it extremely important that our meetings with prisoners be kept on a strictly regular basis, never failing to keep our appointment with scrupuleous constancy.
Our visits within the prison complex are held in this way:
- On Tuesdays, from 4.30 pm till 7.00 pm, we visit most of the male sections: At present we have no permission to visit Division VI.
- On Thursdays, from 9.30 am till 11.30 am, we visit the Female Sections.
- Other individual visits are held during the week to both male and female prisoners.
On Tuesday evenings and Thursday mornings our visits to prisoners are held within the divisions themselves where the prisoners have their cells and spend most of the day. The individual visits are held according to the same regime followed in normal cases for all visits to inmates.
During our visits within the divisions we usually go around the large divisions and talk to this and that prisoner. No agenda exists. We simple talk about what anyone would like to bring up. Most of the time, since we usually are always very much expected by the prisoners, they themselves come up to us and begin the discussion.
Apart from general talk, we also deal with personal problems. During our visits, in fact, prisoners take the opportunity to ask for help. These demands are usually related to family, court or prison matters. We always follow each demand very diligently with the competent authorities, and up until the end.
During our visits we regulate ourselves according to our philosophy.
Visit a Prisoner Scheme
Mid-Dlam ghad-Dawl is offering you the unique opportunity to visit a prisoner on a regular basis. You have the desire, we have the contacts. So let’s get together and strike up something beautiful. This may be a most rewarding experience, something you never had before.
“I was in prison and you came to see me.”
Jesus (Mt 25: 36)
You know, some prisoners feel quite abandoned. Some are far away from family and friends. They feel forgotten. They would need to talk. They would love a caring hand to pull out of their solitude. To overcome the pain and the loneliness. They need a generous heart that can make them feel human again. To make them feel respected, and wanted, and waited upon. They need someone to look forward to meet. To talk to. To share. To regain the joy of life. To fill their empty existence during the long hours of dark confinement.
What shall visiting a prisoner entail? This is an very important question you need to consider extremely well. Do NOT take the commitment if you know you’ll be unable to keep up with it.
So, before deciding, you have to consider two things: first, what the commitment entails in practice. Secondly, the Code of Ethics that you shall be expected to adhere to.
So, you’ve seen what responsibilities you shall have by being a visitor, and also what the Code of Ethics expects of you. Great. Now your act of love is just one further step ahead. All you have to do is to give us a call, or send us an email, and we shall take care of the rest.
