"Mid-Dlam għad-Dawl," meaning "From Darkness to Light," was chosen by the founders of our Foundation to reflect their aspirations for a brighter future.
Founded on April 10, 1995, by a group of individuals incarcerated at the Corradino Correctional Facility in Paola, Malta, the organisation initially aimed to assist both prisoners and their families in navigating the challenges of incarceration with dignity. In August of that same year, following their release, two of the founding members took the initiative to continue the work outside of prison.
Today, our organisation offers a range of services to individuals in prison, their families, and those reintegrating into society after incarceration. Mid-Dlam għad-Dawl is also an active member of COPE (Children of Prisoners Europe), a pan-European network dedicated to supporting children with incarcerated parents.
Mid-Dlam għad-Dawl adopted its new emblem in 2002. The emblem features a crooked tree supported by a sturdy mast, symbolising individual human life, which can become twisted due to unfortunate circumstances—an experience familiar to many people in prison and their families.
The mast represents Mid-Dlam għad-Dawl, offering organised and structured support to help the struggling tree regain its original shape. This imagery encapsulates the mission and work of the organisation.
